November 14, 2013 in late night appearances, Now Stream This!, Performances by rock6847

It is with great delight that we watch Lorde’s career flourish here in the States. Her success is grounded in the fact that she is talented, exciting to watch and just plain beautiful. Her music is dark, sincere and thoughtful. Lana Del Rey, take notes. We appreciate artists becoming successful on something more than looks alone. While she continues to promote her debut album, Pure Heroine, New Zealand native, Lorde performed on Late Night with David Letterman (11/12/13).

Lorde chose to kick-off her Letterman appearance with the second single off the album, ‘Team.’ In addition to the appearance on Late Night, Lorde performed for the new Live on Letterman webcast at the Ed Sullivan Theatre, which features a half-hour set from the artist and a few more tracks from the album, including ‘Buzzcut Season,’ ‘Ribs’ and ‘White Teeth Teens’. Both performances are below.

LATE NIGHT APPEARANCES! Yoko Ono – Cheshire Cat Cry (Feat. The Flaming Lips) on Late Night with David Letterman (10/2/13)

October 4, 2013 in late night appearances by rock6847

Last night, Yoko Ono made an appearance on Late Night with David Letterman.  In other words, Yoko Ono makes a statement while great musicians perform in the background.  Letterman’s comment quite rightly summed up the appearance when he stated, “It’s fun when ya leave the theater humming the music from the show.” As for the music, well, it rocked because The Flaming Lips’ Wayne Coyne and Yoko’s son, Sean Lennon were key figures in the formation of these sounds. Don’t be scared, listen with the volume at it’s highest and heed Yoko’s advice to “Stop all wars.”

LATE NIGHT ROCKS! Fred Armisen Gets an Indie Rock Send Off on SNL (5/18/13)

May 20, 2013 in late night appearances, Now Stream This! by rock6847

Armisen SNL send offAs I watched Saturday Night Live from this past Saturday night, I couldn’t help but get huge goosebumps all over my body during the final clip. Fred Armisen, gently closed out his final episode as a cast member on SNL with an original punk-rock ballad ‘It’s A Lovely Day,’ featuring indie-rock legends such as: Steve Jones of the Sex Pistols, Dinosaur Jr’s J Mascis, Sonic Youth’s Kim Gordon, “Portlandia” co-star and Wild Flag member Carrie Brownstein, and husband-and-wife duo Aimee Mann and Michael Penn.

Armisen reprised Ian Rubbish, a fictional punk-rock character with the fictional band, The Bizarros, on lead guitar and vocals, Bill Hader on bass, other departing cast-member Jason Sudeikis on drums, and castmate Taran Killam on second guitar. As the rag-tag group played through the live tune, they were gradually joined by other indie-rock greats mentioned above, only to conclude the song with a heart-wrenching lyric, “It’s been all right / I’ve had a lovely night with you.”

LATE NIGHT ROCKS! Flaming Lips on Late Night with Jimmy Fallon (5/16/13)

May 16, 2013 in late night appearances, Now Stream This! by rock6847

Always true to his word, Wayne Coyne threatened that he’d be naked when performing on Late Night with Jimmy Fallon and despite being draped with brightly lit cables and wires, he was indeed naked. The appearance on Fallon might be described by some as “weird,” but we prefer to say that Coyne takes creativity to a whole new level. With every performance we have ever seen live by The Flaming Lips, the visual spectacle clearly meets and/or exceeds the listening experience. This appearance on Late Night with Jimmy Fallon is no exception. If you click on the photo, you can check out Day 3 of our photo coverage from The Hangout 2012 that includes The Flaming Lips. Below are the videos of his performance where he covered David Bowie’s 1977 track ‘Heroes’ and the track, ‘Try to Explain,’ from their most recent album, The Terror .

Late Night Appearances – Portishead on Late Night with Jimmy Fallon

October 6, 2011 in late night appearances by rock6847

It’s dark, brooding and it’s Portishead, making their first U.S. TV appearance since 1998, that’s 13 years! And, Fallon’s the lucky guy to get the gig. The first video is an Amnesty International benefit track ‘Chase the Tear,’ intended for television broadcast and ‘Mysterons,’ intended only as a web exclusive. The band also announced the release of ‘Chase the Tear’ on vinyl through XL on November 14. On Saturday, October 8, at the Independent Label Market in Brooklyn, 200 signed copies of the 12″ will be available at the XL stall. Upon hearing ‘Mysterons’ there were some chills as we recall the last time we saw them perform this track at Coachella 2008. Enjoy!

Late Night Appearance MGMT covers Floyd on Fallon

September 29, 2011 in late night appearances by rock6847

The continuation of honoring Pink Floyd on Late Night with Jimmy Fallon continues with an appearance by everyone’s favorite psychedelic rock band, MGMT. MGMT showed respect to songwriter Syd Barrett with a performance of ‘Lucifer Sam,’ a tune off of Pink Floyd’s 1967 debut, The Piper at the Gates of Dawn. If you look closely to the guy at the reel-to-reel in the leather jacket, you’ll notice it’s not Joey Ramone, but Deerhunter’s, Bradford Cox. It’s a great week for psychedelic rock!
