NEW MUSIC VIDEO! Black Angels – ‘Black Isn’t Black’ for an Intense Psychedelic Experience

November 15, 2013 in Festivals, New Video Release by rock6847

It shant be long before Austin Psych Fest announces the lineup for their 2014 festival in Austin, Texas, but before they do, the curators of that festival, The Black Angels, share their latest video for ‘Black Isn’t Black,’ from their latest release, Indigo Meadow.

In the video, the dark and haunting tune is complimented by scene that could easily be confused with A Clockwork Orange. This first person perspective plays tricks on your own mind and makes you wonder what might happen in the dark if you were being treated by a creepy nurse. These sounds are reminiscent of a psychedelic time that began in the Sixties, but are now brought up to date to meet our own times. Following the “Ludovico technique” and “pushing the concept of a therapy session with the Black Angels” is what singer, Alex Maas was going for. It worked and now, I feel better.

NEW MUSIC VIDEO! King Khan and the Shrines Release Claymation ‘Darkness’ video

July 24, 2013 in Festivals, New Video Release by rock6847

King Khan and the BBQ Show13

It isn’t often that you come across a psychedelic soul band that is charismatic, talented and sexually appealing. That one band is King Khan and the Shrines. Today, they released their video for ‘Darkness’, a trippy claymation, stop-motion production.  The video begins with a strongman shooting the Human Cannonball from his canon and ends with the Human Cannonball presenting a an unknown heart onto the scales of justice before a Native American shaman. This creativity should come as no surprise from the band’s frontman and very worldly, Arish Ahmad Khan, better known as King Khan. Of Indian descent, born in Montreal and residing in Berlin, Khan explains that it was “fascinating” to watch the production of the video, created by a German animation collective known as, Hylas. The video was adapted from Hylas’ continuing stop-motion series entitled “Circus,” about a traveling circus trapped in a strange place.

After a six year hiatus in album releases,’Darkness,’ will be featured on their upcoming album, Idle No More, expected for release September 3rd via Merge Records. View the video for ‘Darkness’ below and after the jump, check out our photographic coverage of Day 3 at the Austin Psych Fest 2013, where we enjoyed a psychedelic set by King Khan & The BBQ Show.

NEW ARTIST INTRO! Machines Are People Too Gets Ready to Release Nickels & Dimes on 7/23/13

July 22, 2013 in New Artist Intros, New single, New Video Release by rock6847

If you are looking for synth-rock with a side of smiles, Nashville-based quartet, Machines Are People Too are all you need. Nickels & Dimes, expected for release on tommorow, (7/23), kicks off with ‘Get Up,’ a track that immediately catches your attention and captures a bit of what the energy might be like if you saw them live. The children’s choir singing along in the background give warmth to the track that easily focuses on good feelings and happiness. ‘Get Up’ and most of the tracks on the album find that youthfulness that we all yearn for on a daily basis.

Songs like ‘I’m Alright’ confirm that regardless of all the confusion we all feel on a daily basis, we can take comfort in the fact that we are generally all “okay”. That confirmation declared in a song is sometimes what everyone needs to move forward and onto the next day. The strong self-awareness continues in ‘Do What You Love’ and the song title, by itself, hints at what you would expect. ‘Do What You Love,’ tells you “There’s nothing that you cannot do.” Again, the tune incorporates the children performing back-up en mass. It’s fresh, it’s simple and it makes people happy.   Check out the video below for ‘Do What You Love,’ directed by Dylan Adams, the perfect compliment to their happy sounds.

The final track, ‘Can’t Keep Running’ is a mellower tune that reminds you to slow the f*@k down, face your challenges and deal with them. If you grab the EP on iTunes, you’ll be entitled to a bonus track called ‘Our Time.’ Another great track that tugs at your emotions and makes you examine yourself in an introspective way.

Before listening to this EP, I considered a life coach or a therapist, but not anymore. MRP2 is that support system, that pep talk and that musical friend you have been waiting for. If you like Matt & Kim, Passion Pit, Phoenix or Youngblood Hawke, you will most certainly enjoy this band and this album.

4. Do What You Love
5. Can’t Keep Running

NEW MUSIC VIDEO! Jacuzzi Boys – ‘Double Vision’

July 16, 2013 in New Video Release by rock6847

Girls licking bowling balls and enticing an elderly man in Jacuzzi Boys’ official video for ‘Double Vision’

Miami-based garage rock noise band, Jacuzzi Boys are almost ready to release their self-titled third album, expected for release September 10, 2013 via Hardly Art.  Taking time out of Florida to record the album, they continue to work outside the box and include sounds we hadn’t previously heard before. When we spoke with Gabriel at the end of May for the Jacuzzi Boys tour kick off Backstage at the Fillmore, he was confident that their third album would make an impact upon existing and future fans. Seeing ‘Double Vision’ performed live that night certainly confirmed his confidence. Enjoy the video for ‘Double Vision’ above, but more importantly, enjoy the tune.

NEW MUSIC VIDEO! Queens of the Stone Age – ‘If I Had a Tail’

May 20, 2013 in New Video Release, Now Stream This! by rock6847

In the fourth animated video for Queens of the Stone Age album, …Like Clockwork, we see a cartoon-infested male driving a blood-spattered T-bird with skulls hanging from the rearview mirror. We see the cartoon-infested male getting enjoyment from chucking Molotov cocktails at other bikers. ‘If I Had A Tail,’ the fourth video from …Like Clockwork, continues the violently themed videos begun by other tracks ‘I Appear Missing,’ ‘Kalopsia,’ and ‘Keep Your Eyes Peeled.’ As for the track itself, it’s thick in the middle and sticks around in your mind long after the tune has ended. Looking forward to more!

Just added: We have been advised that QotSA have put out a complete video of all the videos produced so far, as one continuous piece. Like our friend, Si, we hope they do this for the other half! See the entire video here.

…Like Clockwork is out June 4th USA and June 3rd UK. Pre-order here: Matador Store, iTunes: Pre-order & get My God Is The Sun instantly.  All art by boneface.

NEWS YOU CAN USE! Filter touring and releasing new album, The Sun Comes Out Tonight on June 4th

May 18, 2013 in New single, New Video Release, News You Can Use, Now Stream This! by rock6847

Formed in 1993, Filter has consistently enjoyed commercial success over the past two decades. With the release of their first album back in 1995, Short Bus, it seemed that audiences were slightly confused about how to categorize Filter, but music writers would quickly label them as a unique blend of industrial and grunge. With their most notable and successful hit, ‘Hey Man Nice Shot,’ the album soared to #3 on Billboard’s Heatseekers Chart and went on to sell more than a million copies. They continued to delight their fans with 1999’s Title of Record which featured ‘Welcome To The Fold’ and everyone’s most memorable Filter track, ‘Take A Picture’. While they didn’t exactly achieve the same chart-topping success after Title of Record, they continued to release more albums (2002’s the Amalgamut, 2008’s Anthems For The Damned and 2010’s The Trouble with Angels) and their success came from singles included on blockbuster soundtracks, such as 2012’s, Judgment Night, Spawn – the Crystal Method collaboration ‘(Can’t You) Trip Like I Do’- Little Nicky, Demon Knight, Stepfather, Anger Management, Crow 2, Girl Next Door and Cable Guy.

Here we are in 2013, as Filter gets ready to release their sixth studio album, The Sun Comes Out Tonight via Wind-up Records on June 4, 2013. The album was written and recorded by leader/co-founder, Richard Patrick and guitarist, Jonny Radtke, as well as collaborator/producer, Bob Marlette. The first single off the new album, ‘What Do You Say’, is now available on the band’s official site as a free download. The official track listing for the album is listed below the videos.

Filter kicks off their 2013 tour with two headlining shows (Niceville, FL on May 25th and then, Ft. Lauderdale on May 26th at the Culture Room in Ft. Lauderdale). After those two dates, they’ll be on their Summerland Tour (with Everclear, Live and Sponge), see the Interactive video poster below. Their tour will include some select headline dates in between. See all the tour dates below.

Can’t wait until June 4th? Grab the single ‘What Do You Say’ on iTunes instantly when you Pre-Order The Sun Comes Out Tonight on iTunes or directly from Filter. NOW STREAM THIS! Deerhunter – Monomania (First Listen)

May 2, 2013 in New Video Release, Now Stream This! by rock6847

Deerhunter - credit_robert_semmer

Just on the heels of seeing Deerhunter this past Saturday at the Austin Psych Fest, the band’s image and sound is still freshly imprinted in our minds. And, since they performed a few of the tunes from their yet-to-be-released album, we were more than ready for whatever the full album had to offer. What is Deerhunter? What can you expect from a band with such name? You can expect the creative and hugely talented, Bradford Cox. You can expect music that takes you out of the environment you are used to and places you in a new place and time. While the founding member, Bradford Cox obsessively creates a space for himself (during sound check and otherwise) he ultimately intrigues the listener, takes note of his own actions and entices one to continue listening.

Monomania, to be released next week, is yet another example of how Cox can take a simple moment in time and carefully immerse you into psychedelic sounds. But, the best part about the album, the sounds don’t necessarily all stay the same throughout. We were pleasantly surprised by the variety throughout the album. From the mellow, atmospheric sounds in the opening track, ‘Leather Jacket II,’ to the fuzz and noise in ‘Pensacola’ only to reach al the way around to the garage-pop worthy sounds in ‘Dream Captain’. ‘Blue Agent’ definitely gives us chills, perhaps because we got to see them perform live the other night, but its chord changes could easily remind us of some great childhood memory.

Overall, Monomania is a truly well-balanced effort making every tune listenable and enjoyable, regardless of your genre leanings. Be sure that if you are a fan of psychedelia, garage and mind-expanding music, this is the album for you to explore further. Click below to stream a first listen a full week earlier to the release via NPR’s First Listen.  Then, check out their live appearance on Late Night with Jimmy Fallon and finally, the video for ‘Monomania’.  Be sure to buy the album upon release next week on Amazon or iTunes.

NOW STREAM THIS! Life Coach – Alphawaves

April 18, 2013 in New Release Tuesday, New Video Release, Now Stream This! by rock6847

Life Coach_AlphawavesLife Coach, it’s what every person should have in their life, whether it be another person, themselves or this band. The band, Life Coach, considered to fall into the “prog rock” genre, is a collaboration between Phil Manley on guitar/synth/vocals (formerly of Trans Am and The Fucking Champs) and Jon Theodore on drums/percussion (The Mars Volta, One Day As A Lion). With the release of Alphawaves via Thrill Jockey Records on 4/16/13, they have added Isaiah Mitchell (Earthless and Golden Void), who contributed on lead guitar in several songs. What you should know is that the album was written and performed “live” as one continuous piece of work. As you listen to the entire album, you’ll notice that each track flows into the next with barely any breaks.

The album kicks off with ‘Sunrise,’ a tune that immediately says “Listen to me, I’m worth of your ear,” but the tune that really captured our attention was the title track ‘Alphawaves’. It’s a long track (clocking in at seven minutes), but the guitar riffs, piano are well complimented by the hypnotic beats. I was immediately reminded of the Holy F*ck’s track, ‘Latin America’. The album continues to attract the listener with phuzzy and phat guitar riffs, and at some point, lyrics are indeed incorporated into some of the tunes, see ‘Fireball.’ Life Coach provides you with memories of psychedelic and prog rock bands from the 70’s, and probably should be one of the bands performing at Austin Psych Fest 2013 (next week). The final track, ‘Ohm,’ clocking in at over seven minutes, is another instrumental without lyrics, but continued to keep us interested until the bitter end. Let’s just say that at no point during the album play did I consider skipping a track or turning it off.

Check out the album preview below, then the video for ‘Fireball,’ and if you like it as much as we do, go and buy it here.
