NEW RELEASE TUESDAY! Marilyn Manson – Born Villain

May 4, 2012 in New Release Tuesday, New Video Release, Now Stream This!

On April 30th, Marilyn Manson’s unique brand of entertainment was unleashed, but this time with the release of the album, Born Villain,  on his own label, Hell, Etc. (in association with Cooking Vinyl). The new label is in response to poor sales of his last album via Interscope, The High End of Low. Back in September, 2011, we reported on the release of the title track and the accompanying video for Born Villain. And, while Born Villain is certainly no Antichrist Superstar, the album expresses what Marilyn Manson fans have come to enjoy from him over the years, creepy, ominous lyrics accompanied by whispering dystopian poetry and deep bass guitar licks. ‘Lay Down Your Goddamn Arms’ kinda throws you back to the 90′s alternative sound and a bit of Stone Temple Pilots. There is a bonus collaboration with Johnny Depp on ‘You’re So Vain.’ Possibly, a tongue-in-cheek exploration into their respective personas.

Manson has previously stated to Billboard that this “self-release” album was liberating. Stating further: “I’ve always had control over what I created, and in the past once I turned it over to the record label, what happened wasn’t always to my liking,” he said. “A lot of it was more their stupidity, trying to fit me into a hole I didn’t belong in, and that would of course make you confused about what you’re supposed to be as an artist, not even just as a person. Getting off Interscope gave me the ability to think exactly how you would when you’re starting out.” If you are so inclined, check out Manson on tour. Born Villan is streaming in its entirely at AOL Music, click here.

NOW STREAM THIS! Aaron Freeman – Marvelous Clouds

May 3, 2012 in Now Stream This!

The man who we have affectionally known under the moniker, Gene Ween, has decided to go solo as none other than himself, Aaron Freeman. The original half of the band Ween, has chosen to cover Rod McKuen’s poetry for his début release. Having always referred to Ween as “rock and roll chameleons,” it comes as no surprise to us that Freeman has chosen to challenge himself with a solo project. Do not expect Gene Ween, you will be disappointed. The dreamy, light melodies on Marvelous Clouds are a welcome departure from what we have enjoyed by Ween over the years. You could say that the album is a “personal statement” by Freeman, but we’d rather say that he’s a true artist exploring his options. The instrumentals on the title track to Marvelous Clouds is quite perfectly matched with his vocals, ‘The Beautiful Strangers’ could easily become a theme song in one’s lifetime music diary  (and the guitar solos are pretty sweet, too) and ‘One by One’ conjures up images of joyful experiences in your life.

Rod McKuen, an immensely successful and prolific artist whose work was almost universally dismissed by critics, started setting his lyrics to music in the late sixties and early seventies. Over the years, his songs became hits, having been covered by Perry Como, Petula Clark, Johnny Mathis, and many other artists. His most famous composition, a set of new lyrics for Jacques Brel’s “Le Moribond” that was retitled “Seasons in the Sun” and ultimately became a hit for the Canadian singer, Terry Jacks. Marvelous Clouds (via Partisan), will be released May 8th and is available for presale here. Until then, stream the entire album below.

NEW RELEASE TUESDAY! Father John Misty – Fear Fun

May 1, 2012 in New Release Tuesday, Now Stream This!

J. Tillman, the Fleet Foxes drummer and solo singer-songwriter, departs the Fleet Foxes to record Fear Fun via Subpop, under the pseudonym, Father John Misty. You can hear the echoes of the Fleet Foxes within some of the songs, especially ‘O I Long to Feel Your Arms Around Me.’ For the most part, however, the album is made up of playful, folk tunes, ever-so-slightly disguised as pop. Stream the entire album below and below that, check out the videos for ‘Hollywood Forever Cemetery Sings’ and ‘Nancy From Now On.’

NEW RELEASE TUESDAY! The Brian Jonestown Massacre – Aufheben

May 1, 2012 in New Release Tuesday, Now Stream This!

The Brian Jonestown Massacre, more affectionatly known as BJM, have released their new album Aufheben today. Scroll down to the bottom of the page to listen to the album in its entireity. Aufheben, the German word for “preserve” or “abolish,” was recorded in Berlin at frontman Anton Newcombe’s studio and the East German Radio Station “Studio East.” Discussing how he would describe the sound of ‘Aufheben’, Newcombe stated: “I feel like I am on the crossroads of creating an epic soundtrack for film, so in a word, [Aufheben sounds] cinematic.”

Aufheben provides the listener with a retro, middle-eastern, psychedelic shoegazing, dream-pop, 60′s rock experience. If you like The Black Angels, you’ll like BJM (it’s just a bit more mellow). Aufheben is BJM’s 13th studio release and a follow-up to 2010′s Who Killed Sgt. Pepper?. The album features the return of original band mate, Matt Hollywood, along with contributions from Will Carruthers [Spacemen 3, Spritualized], Constatine Karlis [Dimmer] and Thibault Pesenti [Rockcandys]. After you listen to the album below, you can purchase Aufheben.

NEW RELEASE TUESDAY! Lower Dens – Twin-Hand Movement

May 1, 2012 in New Release Tuesday, Now Stream This!

Lower Dens releases their sophomore album, Nootropics, today. Texas-born, Jana Hunter, is currently making her home in Baltimore. Hunter, widely considered the heartbeat of Lower Dens, is a classically trained violinist who took up the guitar and was the first person to release a record on Devendra Banhart and Andy Cabic’s Gnomonsong via 2005′s Blank Unstaring Heirs Of Doom, followed by 2007′s There’s No Home and Carrion EP on the same label. This guitar band shows evolution in its release of Nootropics exploring “Krautrock” beats and dark, synthpop melody. Hunter’s rich and powerful vocals are the constants, but on Twin-Hand Movement, you can expect less experiments and a more well-produced sound. The single, ‘Brains’ is a very hypnotic tune that will continue to lure you back, again and again.  If you like Beach House, you’ll enjoy Lower Dens. Go ahead and stream ‘Lamb,’ ‘Propagation,’ and ‘Brains’ below and stream the entire album at NPR here. If you like what you hear, then pick up your every own copy of Nootropics here.

NEW RELEASE TUESDAY! Santigold – Master of My Make Believe

May 1, 2012 in New Release Tuesday, Now Stream This!

She might evoke a series of tushy shakes and dance moves, but don’t even try to compare Santi White, aka Santigold, to M.I.A., it pisses her off. Today, Santigold, releases her newest album, Master of My Make Believe. Despite the four-year gap between her debut album and Master of My Make Believe, she hasn’t been idle. She’s worked with everyone from new wave legends Devo to Christina Aguilera; appeared on albums by Spank Rock, NASA and the Beastie Boys and is set to appear on forthcoming songs by Amadou & Mariam.

While new Santigold material emerged in May 2011 with Karen O-featuring Go!, she remained silent until last month, finally announcing plans to release Master of My Make-Believe. Just prior to the announcement, she released ‘Big Mouth,’ (video below) which features heavy drums and beats. ‘Disparate Youth,’ the album’s first single, is a contagious tune that includes a mix of synth, bursting guitars, reggae beats and of course, Santigold’s unique brand of vocals. While we didn’t catch Santigold’s entire set at Coachella 2012, we were fortunate to catch ‘Disparate Youth’ (streaming above and video below). Take comfort that this Philly-born lady can entertain.  Pick up your copy of  Master of My Make Believe here.

GREAT LIVE MUSIC! The Felice Brothers at the Westcott Theatre – Syracuse, NY (4/26/12)

April 30, 2012 in Great Live Music, Now Stream This!

The Felice Brothers always throw a party on stage. They are the closest thing out there to the late Levon Helm’s former band. The best part is that they aren’t pretenders. No bullshitting, they have a straightforward, do-what-we-wanna-do attitude, and it’s obvious that they love to play along side each other. While not taking themselves too seriously, they are serious musicians. They know when to have fun and when to turn up the intensity, bringing the crowd along for the ride.

They opened up with ‘Hey Hey Revolver,’ wasting no time getting the crowd on the same page as them. Highlights were ‘Run Chicken Run,’ ‘Helen Fry’ & ‘Fire at the Pageant.’ They are always fun to watch on stage, particularly piano/accordion player, James Felice & fiddle player, Greg Farley. Despite the great set, I was slightly disappointed by the absence of any Levon Helms covers.

The fact that they only played for an hour was the only thing preventing this from being a top notch show. Not sure this decision to cut the performance short was by choice or if there was a curfew. The band seemed slightly confused at the end of ‘Frankie’s Gun’ and it seemed as though even they were unsure whether or not they were finished with the set. It appeared as if security was rushing people out the moment the last note was played. If you have never seen a Felice Brothers show, put it on your to do list, you won’t be disappointed.
