VOYAGES OF RC! Jacuzzi Boys with the Holy Terrors and unusual guests at Churchill’s Pub (5/12/12)

May 15, 2012 in New Video Release, Now Stream This!, Performances, Voyages of Rock Cousteau

After hitting 26 cities in their first European Tour, the Jacuzzi Boys triumphantly returned to their hometown of Miami for a very special performance at Churchill’s Pub, the venue that helped shape them into the band they have become. Always a considerate host, Gabriel, the lead singer and guitarist of the Jacuzzi Boys, was excited to share with us that the evening would elicit two surprise guests and to expect the “bizarre and surreal”.

We were also pleased to learn that during their European tour, they sold out both shows in London. After all their success in the States, Gabriel found it unreal that so many people enjoyed their music across the pond. It really is no surprise to us that they would be so beloved by the Europeans and according to Gabriel, it won’t be long before they head back. We also couldn’t wait to hear the three new tunes that
Gabriel promised us for the evening, planned for inclusion in the next album. It’s hard to imagine that there’s another album in the works, when we’re still hooked on Glazin’.

Before Jacuzzi Boys took the stage, we were treated to jugglers, a Mariachi Band and the reunion of the legendary South Florida rock band, The Holy Terrors. The Holy Terrors, formed in South Florida in 1991, took the stage at Churchill’s in Miami for the first time in over 17 years. Their set was tight and harkened back to days of yore. Certainly, surreal and definitely, bizarre!

Finally, Jacuzzi Boys step out. Gabriel requests “sexy” lighting and welcomes the crowd with a warm “Hello Miami!” and “give it up for the fuckin’ clown”. Whipped into a frenzy, the crowd sang along and some even danced on stage. Of course, no JB show would be complete without Jacuzzi Gals, who were out in full force, either on the stage or sitting on it. They sounded tight and battle tested. With each and every song, the crowd grew more and more electrtic. The slide show above captures the essence of the evening and all its merriment. Certainly, it was wonderful to be part of such a special evening.

Space Between Words, don’t we all wish for that when the lines of communication begin to break down? Formed in January of 2010, Space Between Words is a soulful southern rock band, with an alternative twist and an edgy 70’s garage bite. Imagine the Doors morphed with The Pixies and that might be what you get with Space Between Words. If you are in South Florida, you can catch these Native Floridians at the Green Room Nightclub with Deaf Poets, The Mirrors & Magic Hat Art Battle, tomorrow, Saturday, May 12th.  Click here for more information about the event and stream the EP, Valley of the Lizard King, below. VOYAGES OF RC! Elvis Costello and The Imposters – The Spinning Wheel Tour at The Seminole Hard Rock, Hollywood, FL (4/25/12)

April 29, 2012 in Now Stream This!, Performances, Voyages of Rock Cousteau

Certainly, Elvis Costello enjoys what he does for a living and that was clear when we saw him perform backed by The Imposters at The Seminole Hard Rock Hotel and Casino in Hollywood, Florida on April 25, 2012. Wearing a top hat and wielding a cane, he promised us that there would be songs about love and sex and death. It was a carnival of sorts and he kept his promise. Elvis enlisted the audience’s help and orchestrated an event where they had the opportunity to partially determine the outcome of the evening’s events. The evening would further be guided with the assistance of a voluptuous “Vanna White” of sorts and a sexy go-go dancer in full-on knee-high red boots, big hair and noticeable earrings.

Throughout the performance, audience members were hand-picked by the voluptuous Vanna White to join the band on stage, give The Spinning Songbook a whirl and then conduct themselves however they wished while Elvis and the band performed the song. Elvis also included a Hammer of Songs where a few ladies from the audience could should their strength. It was a high energy performance filled with hits and rarities from Elvis’ vast catalog. We were especially excited to hear at least four songs from Get Happy, one of Elvis’ under-appreciated classics. Another highlight for us was the cover of Prince’s ‘Purple Rain’. Along with the unique setlist, provided via Elvis Costello’s website, check out the photos and video below.

VOYAGES OF RC! Van Halen with Kool & the Gang at the Bank Atlantic Center, Sunrise, FL (4/10/12)

April 11, 2012 in Now Stream This!, Voyages of Rock Cousteau

Before heading out to Coachella 2012 in a few days, Rock Cousteau was invited by South Florida Music Obsessed to attend Van Halen opened by Kool and the Gang at the Bank Atlantic Center in Sunrise, Florida. It was a reunion of sorts, as both bands hold special places in our hearts. The most confusing part of the evening was the choice to pair up Van Halen and Kool and the Gang. Both bands are to be applauded for their uniqueness, but we weren’t so sure that the bands really complimented one another on the same bill.

Despite the awkward pairing, Kool and the Gang took control of their most fortunate opportunity. You don’t even realize it until you see them live, but this band managed to pump out a bunch of great hits over the years. They even pulled out the horns for ‘Jungle Boogie’. Admit that you never had the good fortune of dancing or singing karoake to ‘Celebration,’ and we will accuse you of lying! Get funky and get with Kool and the Gang!

Kool & the Gang setlist:
1. Fresh
2. Tonight
3. Emergency
4. Misled
5. Too Hot
6. Hollywood Swingin’
7. Jungle Boogie
8. Ladies’ Night
9. Get Down On It
10. Celebration

Van Halen, presently on their A Different Kind of Truth world tour has been composed of several lead singers over the years, only to return live with their original self-inflated lead singer, David Lee Roth a/k/a Diamond Dave. While they sprinkled in tunes from their most recent album, Different Kind of Truth, the audience was fortunate to receive a crap load of their hits. We saw Van Halen a few years ago, the last time they were in South Florida, and we were so pleased that they didn’t have a repeat performance. The sound was infinitely much better and we even got to see David Lee Roth wiggle his ass a bunch. Not gonna get into the whole “blower” issue, but there were techinical issues that pissed of the band during the performance, and rightfully so. Despite the hiccup, it didn’t diminish the performance. We are aware that there were probably handy tricks used to enhance Dave’s vocals, but it was hardly noticeable, nor did we care. Dave definitely provided less jumping around on the stage than in years before. Eddie Van Halen still has some really mad guitar skills, as was evident by his solo after ‘Panama’. The night was neatly tied with a bow by ‘Ain’t Talkin’ ‘Bout Love’ and ‘Jump’. I would say that the only disappointment for us was the absence of ‘Jamie’s Cryin’. Oh well, we can’t always get what we want.

Van Halen setlist:
1. Unchained
2. Runnin’ With the Devil
3. She’s the Woman
4. Romeo Delight
5. Tattoo
6. Everybody Wants Some!!
7. Somebody Get Me a Doctor
8. China Town
9. Hear About It Later
10. Oh, Pretty Woman (Roy Orbison cover)
11. Drum Solo
12. You Really Got Me (The Kinks cover)
13. The Trouble with Never
14. Dance the Night Away
15. I’ll Wait (footage from show)
16. Hot for Teacher (footage from show)
17. Women In Love
18. Outta Love Again

VOYAGES OF RC! Sir Elton John at the Bank Atlantic Center, Sunrise, FL (3/9/12)

March 10, 2012 in Performances, Voyages of Rock Cousteau

Elton John received a warm welcome from the Sunshine State.  After battling a massive traffic jam to enter the Bank Atlantic Center for this sold out event, Elton delivered an extremely worthwhile performance.   Elton managed to take us back in time, in what seemed a way that was to reveal a different era through each song.  The result was magnificent.  There were moments where the song made you feel like you were being lifted off the ground  and taken to that time period, for just a moment.  ‘Funeral/Love Lies,’ ‘Honky Cat,’ and ‘Standing’ took us all away.  Not every single song took us “away,” but these were the lucky few.   This was an event where mothers and daughters, fathers and sons, and sisters and brothers would take the journey together.  The audience was a mixture of seasoned veterans as well as plenty of virgins.

As Elton came out from behind the keyboard section and walked out on stage the crowd erupted into an appreciative applause.  The stage setting was deceiving, as at moments it seemed very intimate and at others very open.  Part of the deceit included what seemed as if the band was accessible to everyone.  Althought there was magnificent lighting, there was a simplicity on the stage that made the event all about the musicians.   The two jumbotrons on each side of the stage gave you a closer glimpse into the talented  Elton and his band.  From the beginning to the end, the momentum of the show never slowed down.  He performed 30 songs in a 2 1/2 hour set without taking a break.  Probably the favorite tune of the evening for us was ‘Tiny Dancer,’ which he performed to perfection.  For the notes we didn’t think he could he hit, he changed it up a bit in an effort to stay the course.  It worked.    He performed legendary Leon Russell’s tunes ‘Gone to Shiloh’ and ‘Monkey Suit’ and dedicated both to to his idol, Russell.  ’Candle in the Wind,’ a poignant and memorable song, became a vigil for an era gone by and the Center became illuminated by cell phones (instead of lighters like the old days).  ‘Crocodile Rock’ was the “audience participation song,” of the evening, as Elton stopped to let the audience sing the “La…La, La, La” part.

‘Tiny Dancer’ – Elton John

Sir Elton John, we humbly thank you for taking us back and providing us with a very memorable evening.  Buy his greatest hits on Amazon here.

NEW ARTIST INTRO! Yogurt Smoothness – Live Forever EP

February 25, 2012 in New Artist Intros, New Video Release, Now Stream This!

Two-piece Orlando noise rock duo Yogurt Smoothness are intense and frankly, awesome. The first single , ‘Time Waster’ off of their latest album, Live Forever, is the perfect example of the sludgy heaviness (is that even a word?) that is embodied in their sound. Tapping into early grunge, they crank it up for their second release Live Forever, a 6 song EP that infuses the raw and unpolished undertones and distorted vocals of bands like Nirvana, Filter, Mudhoney, Sonic Youth, and the White Stripes (another two-piece outfit). Bandmates Dan and Brian create a masterpiece of loud gritty guitars, overdriven vocals, unconventional arrangements, and squealing feedback. In addition to these efforts, they are the curators of Two Piece Mini Fest, an innovative series of concerts that take place two times a year, on two stages, with only two-member bands. Be on the look-out as they are planning a summer tour from Florida to Boston as a follow-up to their wildly successful “Tour Forever” 2011 tour.

Check out a nice sampling of their tunes below, along with the video for ‘Time Waster’ and if you like them, go ahead, don’t be shy and support them by buying their music.
