NEW RELEASE TUESDAY! The Brian Jonestown Massacre – Aufheben

May 1, 2012 in New Release Tuesday, Now Stream This!

The Brian Jonestown Massacre, more affectionatly known as BJM, have released their new album Aufheben today. Scroll down to the bottom of the page to listen to the album in its entireity. Aufheben, the German word for “preserve” or “abolish,” was recorded in Berlin at frontman Anton Newcombe’s studio and the East German Radio Station “Studio East.” Discussing how he would describe the sound of ‘Aufheben’, Newcombe stated: “I feel like I am on the crossroads of creating an epic soundtrack for film, so in a word, [Aufheben sounds] cinematic.”

Aufheben provides the listener with a retro, middle-eastern, psychedelic shoegazing, dream-pop, 60′s rock experience. If you like The Black Angels, you’ll like BJM (it’s just a bit more mellow). Aufheben is BJM’s 13th studio release and a follow-up to 2010′s Who Killed Sgt. Pepper?. The album features the return of original band mate, Matt Hollywood, along with contributions from Will Carruthers [Spacemen 3, Spritualized], Constatine Karlis [Dimmer] and Thibault Pesenti [Rockcandys]. After you listen to the album below, you can purchase Aufheben.

NEW ARTIST INTRO! Acid Baby Jesus self-titled LP

February 13, 2012 in New Artist Intros, Now Stream This!

From Athens, Greece, we present, Acid Baby Jesus. The Acid Babies’ new self-titled LP is out since October on Slovenly Recordings. They toured in the States and we missed them in Miami, but hopefully, there will be another opportunity soon. For example, if you are lucky enough to get to the Austin Psych Fest this year, that’s where you can find them. If you like Jacuzzi Boys or Black Lips, this is a band for you. You want fuzz? They got fuzz! It’s definitely psychedelic/experimental/noise/garage/post-punk, so if you don’t even remotely like that genre, we highly recommend that you peruse another post, however, if you love psychedelic/experimental/noise/garage/post-punk, you will love this band.

February 9, 2012 in late night appearances, Now Stream This!

Team Coco created a safe place for Dr. Dog last night (2/9/12) and for that, we are grateful. In support of their seventh album release, Be the Void, released this past Tuesday, Dr. Dog performed ‘That Old Black Hole’, a track off of Be The Void.  These are psychedelic/folk/indie-influenced rockers that continue to amaze us with their growth. View the video below, courtesy of the Audio Perv.

NOW STREAM THIS! Nurses – Saturday Morning with NURSES (Secret Garden video series)

December 13, 2011 in New Video Release, Now Stream This!

Most nurses can help heal the ill and infirm, but these Nurses may help heal a broken soul or maybe even a broken heart. This Portland-based indie rock trio composed of Aaron Chapman (vocals, guitar, keyboard), John Bowers (backing vocals, keyboard), and James Mitchell (percussionist & visual artist) is often considered psychedelic, experimental pop and/or folk rock. Back in September we mentioned the release of Dracula here on Rock Cousteau. If you like Grizzly Bear, you will enjoy Nurses dreamy harmonies, carnival organs, slightly out-of-tune pianos and basic percussion from a lone snare or tambourine. Check out this very acoustic session entitled “Saturday Morning with NURSES (Secret Garden video series)” which took place at Piano’s in NYC. Very interesting venue.

NEW ARTIST INTROS! RANCHO RELAXO – ‘Wisdom Blackout’ and ‘I Want You’

December 9, 2011 in New Artist Intros, Now Stream This!

At Rock Cousteau, we are always keeping our ears open for groovy new sounds. Our friend, Ashley, in England, has introduced us to Norwegian natives, Rancho Relaxo. The band was formed in 2003, but officially took shape in 2006 with twangy & jangly shoegaze guitars, lots of strings, tambourines, a sitar, paisley neo-psychedelia, lots of reverb, trippy melodies and fuzzy freak outs! Check out the sounds below and below that, check out the videos for their single ‘Wisdom Blackout’ and the single ‘I Want You,’ expected for release on their upcoming album, Happy Friday Experiment on Trout as Lubrication Records. The video for ‘Wisdom Blackout’ will either keep you mesmorized or encourage you to get a hoola-hoop. Just get groovy. Hopefully, they’ll be at Austin Psych Fest in 2012.
