VOYAGES OF RC! Jacuzzi Boys with the Holy Terrors and unusual guests at Churchill’s Pub (5/12/12)

May 15, 2012 in New Video Release, Now Stream This!, Performances, Voyages of Rock Cousteau

After hitting 26 cities in their first European Tour, the Jacuzzi Boys triumphantly returned to their hometown of Miami for a very special performance at Churchill’s Pub, the venue that helped shape them into the band they have become. Always a considerate host, Gabriel, the lead singer and guitarist of the Jacuzzi Boys, was excited to share with us that the evening would elicit two surprise guests and to expect the “bizarre and surreal”.

We were also pleased to learn that during their European tour, they sold out both shows in London. After all their success in the States, Gabriel found it unreal that so many people enjoyed their music across the pond. It really is no surprise to us that they would be so beloved by the Europeans and according to Gabriel, it won’t be long before they head back. We also couldn’t wait to hear the three new tunes that
Gabriel promised us for the evening, planned for inclusion in the next album. It’s hard to imagine that there’s another album in the works, when we’re still hooked on Glazin’.

Before Jacuzzi Boys took the stage, we were treated to jugglers, a Mariachi Band and the reunion of the legendary South Florida rock band, The Holy Terrors. The Holy Terrors, formed in South Florida in 1991, took the stage at Churchill’s in Miami for the first time in over 17 years. Their set was tight and harkened back to days of yore. Certainly, surreal and definitely, bizarre!

Finally, Jacuzzi Boys step out. Gabriel requests “sexy” lighting and welcomes the crowd with a warm “Hello Miami!” and “give it up for the fuckin’ clown”. Whipped into a frenzy, the crowd sang along and some even danced on stage. Of course, no JB show would be complete without Jacuzzi Gals, who were out in full force, either on the stage or sitting on it. They sounded tight and battle tested. With each and every song, the crowd grew more and more electrtic. The slide show above captures the essence of the evening and all its merriment. Certainly, it was wonderful to be part of such a special evening.

VOYAGES OF RC! Elvis Costello and The Imposters – The Spinning Wheel Tour at The Seminole Hard Rock, Hollywood, FL (4/25/12)

April 29, 2012 in Now Stream This!, Performances, Voyages of Rock Cousteau

Certainly, Elvis Costello enjoys what he does for a living and that was clear when we saw him perform backed by The Imposters at The Seminole Hard Rock Hotel and Casino in Hollywood, Florida on April 25, 2012. Wearing a top hat and wielding a cane, he promised us that there would be songs about love and sex and death. It was a carnival of sorts and he kept his promise. Elvis enlisted the audience’s help and orchestrated an event where they had the opportunity to partially determine the outcome of the evening’s events. The evening would further be guided with the assistance of a voluptuous “Vanna White” of sorts and a sexy go-go dancer in full-on knee-high red boots, big hair and noticeable earrings.

Throughout the performance, audience members were hand-picked by the voluptuous Vanna White to join the band on stage, give The Spinning Songbook a whirl and then conduct themselves however they wished while Elvis and the band performed the song. Elvis also included a Hammer of Songs where a few ladies from the audience could should their strength. It was a high energy performance filled with hits and rarities from Elvis’ vast catalog. We were especially excited to hear at least four songs from Get Happy, one of Elvis’ under-appreciated classics. Another highlight for us was the cover of Prince’s ‘Purple Rain’. Along with the unique setlist, provided via Elvis Costello’s website, check out the photos and video below.

VOYAGES OF RC! Rammstein – Made in Germany Tour at Bank Atlantic Center, Sunrise, FL (4/20/12)

April 24, 2012 in Now Stream This!, Performances, Voyages of Rock Cousteau

Rammstein kicked off their Made in Germany Tour in North America at the Bank Atlantic Center in Sunrise, FL on 4/20/12, coincidentally, a date that is considered a high holiday for many marijuana smokers. Rammstein, formed in 1994, initialed assembled by factory-weary proletarians raised in East Germany, has had no changes in their band line-up nor have any members left the band. The band have stated they were named after the Ramstein airshow disaster. The extra “m” in the band’s name makes it translate literally as “ramming stone”. To some, they are considered one of the ultimate industrial rock bands. The band consists of consists of Till Lindemann (lead vocals), Richard Z. Kruspe (guitar and backing vocals), Paul H. Landers (guitar, backing vocals), Oliver “Ollie” Riedel (bass guitar), Christoph “Doom” Schneider (drums and electronic percussion) and Christian “Flake” Lorenz (keyboards).

Rammstein at the Bank Atlantic Center, Sunrise FL (4/2012), photos:

Rammstein carefully crafts their live performances with a blend of horror and romanticism, also combining both the worlds of theater and music to simply make magic on the stage. Till Lindemann is truly a strong vocalist that you are instantly drawn to and when you see them live, you just want to see what they’ll do next. As we drove up to the Bank Atlantic Center, we saw over 5 large trailers that were hauled in to carry their stuff. This band certainly makes you feel like you haven’t wasted your time by going to see them live. There is magnificent lighting, dangerous pyrotechnics and plenty of animated “Flake” to go around. And, the audience was just as entertaining as the band, as we watched them mosh in their little various circles of pain. Days later, we would find out that many of the audience members had serious neck and muscle spasms. Overall, Rammstein was an entertaining experience and we really enjoyed the music, as well.

VOYAGES OF RC! Van Halen with Kool & the Gang at the Bank Atlantic Center, Sunrise, FL (4/10/12)

April 11, 2012 in Now Stream This!, Voyages of Rock Cousteau

Before heading out to Coachella 2012 in a few days, Rock Cousteau was invited by South Florida Music Obsessed to attend Van Halen opened by Kool and the Gang at the Bank Atlantic Center in Sunrise, Florida. It was a reunion of sorts, as both bands hold special places in our hearts. The most confusing part of the evening was the choice to pair up Van Halen and Kool and the Gang. Both bands are to be applauded for their uniqueness, but we weren’t so sure that the bands really complimented one another on the same bill.

Despite the awkward pairing, Kool and the Gang took control of their most fortunate opportunity. You don’t even realize it until you see them live, but this band managed to pump out a bunch of great hits over the years. They even pulled out the horns for ‘Jungle Boogie’. Admit that you never had the good fortune of dancing or singing karoake to ‘Celebration,’ and we will accuse you of lying! Get funky and get with Kool and the Gang!

10. Celebration

Van Halen, presently on their A Different Kind of Truth world tour has been composed of several lead singers over the years, only to return live with their original self-inflated lead singer, David Lee Roth a/k/a Diamond Dave. While they sprinkled in tunes from their most recent album, Different Kind of Truth, the audience was fortunate to receive a crap load of their hits. We saw Van Halen a few years ago, the last time they were in South Florida, and we were so pleased that they didn’t have a repeat performance. The sound was infinitely much better and we even got to see David Lee Roth wiggle his ass a bunch. Not gonna get into the whole “blower” issue, but there were techinical issues that pissed of the band during the performance, and rightfully so. Despite the hiccup, it didn’t diminish the performance. We are aware that there were probably handy tricks used to enhance Dave’s vocals, but it was hardly noticeable, nor did we care. Dave definitely provided less jumping around on the stage than in years before. Eddie Van Halen still has some really mad guitar skills, as was evident by his solo after ‘Panama’. The night was neatly tied with a bow by ‘Ain’t Talkin’ ‘Bout Love’ and ‘Jump’. I would say that the only disappointment for us was the absence of ‘Jamie’s Cryin’. Oh well, we can’t always get what we want.

VOYAGES OF RC! Sir Elton John at the Bank Atlantic Center, Sunrise, FL (3/9/12)

March 10, 2012 in Performances, Voyages of Rock Cousteau

Elton John received a warm welcome from the Sunshine State.  After battling a massive traffic jam to enter the Bank Atlantic Center for this sold out event, Elton delivered an extremely worthwhile performance.   Elton managed to take us back in time, in what seemed a way that was to reveal a different era through each song.  The result was magnificent.  There were moments where the song made you feel like you were being lifted off the ground  and taken to that time period, for just a moment.  ‘Funeral/Love Lies,’ ‘Honky Cat,’ and ‘Standing’ took us all away.  Not every single song took us “away,” but these were the lucky few.   This was an event where mothers and daughters, fathers and sons, and sisters and brothers would take the journey together.  The audience was a mixture of seasoned veterans as well as plenty of virgins.

As Elton came out from behind the keyboard section and walked out on stage the crowd erupted into an appreciative applause.  The stage setting was deceiving, as at moments it seemed very intimate and at others very open.  Part of the deceit included what seemed as if the band was accessible to everyone.  Althought there was magnificent lighting, there was a simplicity on the stage that made the event all about the musicians.   The two jumbotrons on each side of the stage gave you a closer glimpse into the talented  Elton and his band.  From the beginning to the end, the momentum of the show never slowed down.  He performed 30 songs in a 2 1/2 hour set without taking a break.  Probably the favorite tune of the evening for us was ‘Tiny Dancer,’ which he performed to perfection.  For the notes we didn’t think he could he hit, he changed it up a bit in an effort to stay the course.  It worked.    He performed legendary Leon Russell’s tunes ‘Gone to Shiloh’ and ‘Monkey Suit’ and dedicated both to to his idol, Russell.  ’Candle in the Wind,’ a poignant and memorable song, became a vigil for an era gone by and the Center became illuminated by cell phones (instead of lighters like the old days).  ‘Crocodile Rock’ was the “audience participation song,” of the evening, as Elton stopped to let the audience sing the “La…La, La, La” part.

‘Tiny Dancer’ – Elton John

Sir Elton John, we humbly thank you for taking us back and providing us with a very memorable evening.  Buy his greatest hits on Amazon here.

VOYAGES OF RC! Radiohead at the AA Arena Miami, FL (2/27/12)

February 28, 2012 in New single, News You Can Use, Now Stream This!, Performances, Voyages of Rock Cousteau

Radiohead kicked off their 2012 world tour last night with a debut of two new songs last night (February 27) in Miami at the American Airlines Arena. The opener, Other Lives, while not managing to fill the space the same way as Radiohead, they certainly held their own and provided listeners with a great introduction to their band.

Other Lives, played a short, but very sweet set that included songs off their debut album, Tamer Animals. Check out the video below for a taste of their performance.

In support of their album The King of Limbs, Radiohead, who will be touring throughout the United States and into Mexico for the next two months, shared two new tracks ‘Identikit’ and ‘Cut A Hole’.  Check out the live footage of both tracks below. The 24-song setlist drew heavily upon The King Of Limbs, but also featured a slightly played tune, ‘Meeting In The Aisle’ from the their I Might Be Wrong EP.

As for the show, twelve songs into it, Thom inquires with the audience, “Are you still there?” It could merely have been because everyone was so mesmerized by the band’s performance up to that point or because he was afraid they might not be “there”.  Any die-hard Radiohead fan would be swooning to the sounds, but if you weren’t familiar with the songs, you could easily have been bored halfway through the performance.  We were not bored.

Despite the fact that Radiohead enjoys a full and colorful discography that goes as far back as 1993, like a bird that wants to strut their new feathers, the performance drew heavily from their post-2000 collection. While passing over their most commercial and critically acclaimed albums (Pablo Honey and O.K. Computer), they proceeded to play The King of Limbs in its entirety, but sprinkled in a few tunes from Kid A, Hail to the Thief and In Rainbows.

What we enjoyed most was the extremely eye-popping stage design that included over a dozen video monitors that rotated between songs above the musicians’ heads. For sure, Thom was probably instrumental in making sure the audience was visually entertained while enjoying the sounds.

About halfway through the performance, they played ‘Lotus Flower’ and we actually had to insert our ear protection, as the sounds of Radiohead were becoming intense.  It was then we felt that Yorke had finally become the ‘King of Hymns’.  Yorke began his signature dance moves and the remainder of the band, (guitarists Jonny Greenwood and Ed O’Brien, drummers Phil Selway and Clive Deamer and bassist Colin Greenwood) clicked into synchronicity alongside with him.

Admittedly, the show came to a close with a less-than-complete version of 1997’s ‘Karma Police.’ We captured the entire song below and what you may notice is that there are sounds that are glaringly absent. We kept hearing the sounds in our head, but they never seemed to appear.  Despite that small disappointment, we enjoyed the entire performance and are looking forward to catching them at Coachella. Hoping that they’ll have gotten their sea-legs by then.

In addition to dates in Europe, Radiohead will sprinkle in a few festival appearances throughout the summer, including Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival, Fuji Rock Festival and Bilbao BBK Live festival. Additional UK dates will be confirmed in the next few weeks.

VOYAGES OF RC! The Bruise Cruise Kick-Off with Jacuzzi Boys, The Soft Pack, King Khan & The Shrines, Thee Oh Sees and F*cked Up at The Stage (2/9/12)

February 12, 2012 in Now Stream This!, Performances, Voyages of Rock Cousteau

Each time we walk into a venue for the first time, there’s a part of us that fears the unknown. What will the sound be like, will there be a bathroom nearby and most importantly, what will the audience be like? But seriously, our first shot at The Stage in Miami was beyond all expectations. This was the Bruise Cruise Kick-Off event day 2, not just a concert, and everyone was in the mood to party. Before the bands and the fans took off for their voyage on the SS Minnow, we took our voyage to see a few of the bands perform for us.

Tonight was a chance to RAWK to post-punk, fuzz pop, garage, psychedelic soul, noise & avant garde rock and if you participated, you were rewarded with a smile. The night began with our 305 favs, Jacuzzi Boys. IOHO, this probably was the best set they ever performed. We highly recommend that you check out their earlier work, but click here for a stream of their most recent album release, Glazin’.

Next crew up, The Soft Pack from San Diego, CA. We saw this band at Coachella 2010 and already had a great appreciation for the band. But, as with anything, if you have too many expectations, you set yourself up for disappointment. The bassist, David, was absolutely fantastic. Let’s just say that their performance at Coachella far exceeded that of their performance that evening.

Now, for the evenings festivities to get kicked up just a notch, King Khan & The Shrines took to the stage. It was a carnival of sensory delights and the master of ceremonies was none other than King Khan, as himself. There was moshing, there were drinks being spilled atop our heads and we couldn’t have been more pleased. If you got past the fact that King Khan was wearing a gold cape, an elaborate, feathered headdress and tight black short-shorts adorned by an gilded cup, then you were in for a treat. He’s like the Honey Badger and he doesn’t give a shit. The extremely energetic King Khan was supported by at least 9 Shrines, including Diego from Jacuzzi Boys on the tambourine.

King Khan of King Khan & The Shrines

So, who is King Khan anyway? Who is he channeling exactly? Could it be James Brown? Who knows and who cares, he’s freakin’ awesome. Be sure that all his songs revolve around sex, food and of course rock ‘n roll. This band really knows how to throw a good party. They included tunes from their last album, 2008′s The Supreme Genius of King Khan & the Shrines. Songs included, ‘Land of the Freak,’ ‘Outta Harm’s Way,’ ‘Welfare Bread’ and ‘I Wanna Be a Girl’. The guitarist pictured below, was so up in my grill, I thought he’d knock my head off with his guitar. It was…..incredible.

King Khan & The Shrines

This wasn’t the first time we’d been exposed to King Khan. We had the great fortune to catch them at Coachella 2010 with the Almighty Defenders, as the characters from Yo Gabba Gabba supported them on stage.

In addition to all the mayhem, they debuted a new song ‘Bite My Tongue’ and dedicated a song to the late, great, Jay Reatard. During their set, we wondered how anyone could possibly follow this band. By far, King Khan & The Shrines captured the most of our attention and thus, demanded the largest word count in the review.

Thee Oh Sees took an awfully long time to get their gear set up, but when they finally got on stage, they did nothing but delight the audience. First things first, the lead singer (and main force behind the band), John Dwyer, was acting as the “lost and found” director as he held up someone’s misplaced driver’s license. Finally, they got to the music and when he took the stage, he carried his 12-string guitar characteristically pulled tight and played right up under his chin. The guitarist, Petey, seems to have the same idea and was happy to share a smile with us.

John Dwyer - Thee Oh Sees

Petey Dammit! Thee Oh Sees

Brigid Dawson - Thee Oh Sees

Thee Oh Sees

It’s not so easy to describe this band, but the best description might just be “Psychedelic Garage Rock,” but don’t be fooled, as Thee Oh Sees slide gently out of that description and into their own unique genre all together. When you hear one of their songs, you know who you are listening to. We didn’t catch the whole set, but check out what we did see and listen to some of their tunes below. You’ll understand much better.

Readers take note. We did not see F*cked Up. Hopefully, we’ll find someone who did and add the link to their review here. Until then, go see live local music!

VOYAGES OF RC! Dinosaur Jr. with Yuck at Grand Central Miami FL (1/23/2012)

January 27, 2012 in Now Stream This!, Voyages of Rock Cousteau

As we entered Grand Central Miami and approached the stage, we were faced with a wall of Marshall stacks. It was then we knew we were in the right place, at the right time. Despite the fact that it was a school night, we were loathe to miss out on such a monumental showcase. What we found intriguing was the audience diversity which was littered with both youthful and aging hipsters, garage band enthusiasts and even a pack of plaid-shirt grungers. Regardless of the variety, Grand Central Miami was welcoming to one and all for this, the Dinosaur Jr concert.

Die-hard fans of Dinosaur Jr. may not have been familiar with the opening band, Yuck, but we imagine that many of the fans familiar with Yuck may not have been familiar with Dinosaur Jr’s catalog either. Yuck released their debut self-titled album about a year ago and since that time, this band has had a healthy relationship with the indie/alt rock community. This British band is easily reminiscent of the best early 90′s indie and lo-fi alt rock, taking many cues from bands like Pavement, My Bloody Valentine, Smashing Pumpkins and of course, Dinosaur Jr.

As soon as Yuck took to the stage, the lead singer/guitarist mentioned how in awe he was over “the cave” of sound, graciously borrowed from their cool “Uncle”, Dinosaur Jr. While they played all their hit singles, like ‘Get Away’ and ‘The Wall’, one of our favorite moments during their set was the band huddle during beginning of the final song, ‘Rubber’. Moments like these are why we live for live music.

With very little time between sets, Dinosaur Jr. got on the stage and put the wall of Marshall stacks to good use. The last time Dinosaur Jr. came to Florida, we caught them in Orlando at the House of Blues. Sadly, one of us did not have ear plugs at that show and now looking back, maybe standing directly in front of the speakers was NOT such a good idea. We learned our lesson well and came better prepared for this show. As this is written, the author can still hear a slight ringing in the ears, but sincerely appreciates the lessons in ASL ’cause they’ll come in handy in just a few short years. Yeah, it was loud, but so good. Where else can you experience your arm hairs standing up on end and the ripples of sound blasting through your bones?

For their first trick, J. Mascis solos up with ‘Thumb’ and ‘The Lung’. These songs and the more popular tune, ‘Feel the Pain’ showcase why J. earned his place as “numero 86″ in Rolling Stone‘s 100 Greatest Guitarists. We were pleased that they played the bulk of Your Living All Over Me, tunes from Bug and our favorite, Forget the Swan, off their debut self-titled album. At one point, Lou Barlow lamented to the crowd about missing Miami for so many years and asks them rhetorically, “How come we never came to Miami?” Yeah, how come?

VOYAGES OF RC! Sebadoh, Jacuzzi Boys & Plains at Grand Central Miami (1/18/12)

January 20, 2012 in Now Stream This!, Voyages of Rock Cousteau

So, if you’re kicking yourself about missing the inaugural Weezer Cruise on Carnival’s Destiny, you are not alone. The festival ship embarked upon their 5 day tour Thursday, January 19, 2012 and the impressive artist roster includes: Weezer, Dinosaur Jr., Sebadoh, Wavves, The Antlers, Yuck, Free Energy, Boom Bip, J Mascis, Lou Barlow, Keepaway, Ozma, The Nervous Wreckords, The Knocks, Sleeper Agent, Yacht, Rock Revue. So, while we missed the proverbial and literal “boat”, we still got the chance to catch up with Sebadoh at Grand Central Miami the other night. It also didn’t hurt that Plains and Jacuzzi Boys were there to support Sebadoh.

For those who don’t know, Sebadoh is one of the early indie rock bands from the late 80′s, formed by Eric Gaffney and Dinosaur Jr bassist, Lou Barlow. Forming around the same time as Pavement and Guided by Voices, Sebadoh helped pioneer lo-fi music. The band is now comprised of Barlow, Jason Loewenstein, and Bob D’Amico. And, although the band has not released any material since 1999, they have enjoyed providing fans with reissues over the years. Most recently, they reissued the 1994 classic album, Bakesale.

Local bands from the 305, Plains and Jacuzzi Boys, supported Sebadoh’s appearance at Grand Central last night for an extremely entertaining and nostalgic performance. While there was certainly no moshing or crowd-surfing, the energy was palpable and people were singing along to the tunes they recognized.

The evening started out with Plains, the most promising, emerging band on the local indie rock music scene of Miami. We believe their self-titled album is definitely one of the best indie rock releases out of South Florida this year. Despite their infancy as a group, they already sound like a band that’s been around the block and back. They’ll be part of SXSW and are expected to be showcased at CMJ in October. Click here to check out their video for ‘Black Feeling’ and click here to stream the entire album.  Below are some of the photos we captured during the performance.

As soon as The Jacuzzi Boys took to the stage, the crowd seemed overwhelmed with joy that our local-band-done-good was back to play in their hometown. We had seen The Jacuzzi Boys at Respectable Street under completely different circumstances and the crowd was certainly more mellow at Grand Central. Despite the toned-down appearance of the audience, Gabriel, Danny and Diego managed to put on the hits and certainly, everyone appreciated it. Catch a few of our photos below. While we weren’t fortunate to get a photo of the setlist, here’s what they played:

‘Vizcaya’
‘Crush’
‘Cool Vapors’
‘Dock’
‘Coral Girls’
‘Space Cake ’85′
‘Island Ave’

‘Glazin’

Where do we begin with Sebadoh, their set was chock full of movement and energy. Admittedly, they hadn’t performed in almost 3 years and used this evening as an opportunity to “practice” before taking to the high seas the next day. Our favorites were played, but it seemed the performance lacked a certainly fluidity. We think that part of the reason could have been the fact that Jason and Lou kept switching places on the stage so often. Lou started out playing lead guitar, while Jason was on bass, but more than once, Lou switched over to bass and Jason went on to play lead guitar. It seemed like it should have worked out and they probably thought it was a good idea at the time, but looking back, the change-overs really created a hiccup that they couldn’t quite recover from. Hopefully, they’ll get their rhythm in time for their performance on the Weezer cruise. Regardless, we anticipated nothing and we were pleased with the performance overall.

VOYAGES OF RC! Kitty Jul, The Transfers and The Weedline at Stage 84

December 17, 2011 in Now Stream This!, Voyages of Rock Cousteau

There’s a little hole in the wall, called Stage 84, that’s been in Davie, FL for about 2 years, but we just learned about it before this gig. We have already introduced you to 2 of the 3 bands that performed last night at Stage 84. Kitty Jul, The Transfers and The Weedline hit the perfect Trifecta for a Friday night. This was an extremely comfortable venue and the sound was perfect. There are couches mixed in with tables and chairs and a nice little bar in the back. Hopefully, we’ll find a way to get more emerging bands to play there in the future.

Kitty Jul, a classic progressive punk outfit from Hollywood, FL, was the band we hadn’t heard before. These musicians are seriously tight and we really enjoyed the instrumentals the most. Check out a bit of Kitty Jul below.

The Transfers hail from Daytona, but a few of them were actually returning to their hometown of South Florida for this special performance. They were one of the first bands to play at Stage 84 when it opened a few years ago. We found out about The Transfers a few months ago and seriously enjoy this alternative rock band. One of our favorite tunes of the evening was ‘Going to the Show’. It’s well written and the tune is extremely catchy. We are so honored to have attended this show. We only wish all our friends were there to hear them. This band is really fantastic. Check out their wares below and if you like them, please support them and buy their music.

As if it wasn’t enough that we had two live bands, we were given a treat of a third, The Weedline from Ft. Lauderdale, FL. The Weedline is a rock and roll party band that plays classic rock, modern rock, country, blues, funk and originals that draw from all the above. It’s “rock and roll with an acoustic soul.” Imagine The Beatles, the Rolling Stones, Tom Petty and Lenny Kravitz playing together in one band. For the record, the name, The Weedline, is a reference to the Sargassum seaweed found in the Atlantic Ocean. The floating seaweed provides shade and a nutrient rich environment where small and large marine life alike can hang out (just like the fans of their band). ‘Your Mine I’m Yours’ and ‘Here in My Mind’ are probably a few of our favorite tunes and it was a delight to see them perform them live. Please support this band and see them live or buy their music on iTunes. Go ahead and get a good listen to The Weedline.
